Job Description

Cross cutting studies at the interface between basic and clinical sciences allows close interaction between scientific, computing and clinical groups and a focus on multi-disciplinary research, pulling through biomedical applications from engineering and physical sciences and strategic commercial partnerships into the clinic. This creates an exciting and productive environment that is data rich and ideal for an ambitious and talented data scientist to thrive. This post builds on this world-class environment offered by Imperial College in translational medicine as part of a multi-disciplinary team tackling complex data science problems. 

Duties and responsibilities  

The post holder will be expected to have extensive experience in applying and developing novel approaches to analyses including in areas such as genomics, transcriptomics, metabolomics, metagenomics and sequence analysis. As part of a dynamic and evolving multi-disciplinary group, you will:  

  • Personally undertake a wide range of bioinformatics and statistical/ML/AI analyses to maximise the impact of research within the research portfolio. 
  • Assist in analysis of diverse data sets and provide insight, guidance and interpretation of results. 
  • Plan, analyse problems and communicate results to the group that achieve defined objectives under the leadership of the PI.
  • Develop workflows to process scientific data.
  • Work closely with PIs to publish results, develop grants and provide teaching and training in your areas of expertise. 

Essential requirements  

  • A PhD in an appropriate scientific area such as data analysis, bioinformatics or computer science. 
  • A minimum of two years’ experience of analysing biological/clinical data and writing complex code for bioinformatics analysis 
  • Strong analysis and interpretive skills to integrate, understand and describe complex datasets to provide a deeper understanding of the data. 
  • Excellent programming skills in C++, Matlab, Python or appropriate languages
  • A working knowledge of SQL or other database languages
  • Experience in generating/using production pipelines and workflows
  • A strong Unix background
  • Experience in working with high performance computing

*Candidates who have not yet been officially awarded their PhD will be appointed as Research Assistant within the salary range £35,477 - £38,566 per annum.
