Job Description


The University of Essex in partnership with AND Technology Research Ltd (AND) offers an exciting opportunity for a graduate with the relevant skills and knowledge to develop a first-in-class suite of self-powered, battery-less sensors utilising low-powered processing and an intelligent multi-source energy harvesting system to deliver continuous monitoring capability.

This post is fixed term for 24 months and is based at AND’s offices in Theydon Bois, Epping.


  • Developing and testing the embedded software and hardware used by AND, including the Renesas SOTB chips
  • Assessing the relevance of the latest research to the challenge of developing a multi-source energy harvesting system, and auditing existing technologies
  • Identifying and implementing the most effective techniques for the transfer of data that maximise throughput and efficiency whilst minimising local processing power needs
  • Investigating and leading the decision-making on low-power alternatives to GPS for location tracking
  • Investigating and leading the decision-making on the configuration of hardware and lower level embedded code to minimise power usage
  • Publishing academic journal articles and drafting patent applications, where required
  • Preparing and presenting results of the research programme to both technical panel meetings and lay audiences


  • BSc in Computer Science, Electronic Engineering or related discipline
  • MSc in Electronic Engineering, Embedded Systems, IoT or a related discipline, or relevant industry experience
  • Good theoretical and applied knowledge of the latest techniques in energy harvesting (photovoltaic, vibration, ambient EM etc.)
  • Knowledge of IoT and wireless sensor networks, and the challenges associated with these fields
  • An understanding of electronics and hands on experience
  • Ability to deploy the latest machine learning techniques to develop an intelligent multi-source energy harvesting system
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
Salary: £35,000 - £36,500
